WHAT IS DARF?
The Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club is a non-profit organization consisting of owners, drivers, mechanics, promoters and race fans. It was founded by John "Shorty" Miller, Dale "Lucky" Lutz, Gene Moore, Jerry Wahl and Gene Bundy in the 1960s. Bundy, an open wheel enthusiast, originally held meetings in the early 1960s, when his guest speakers were mainly sprint car drivers. As time progressed, the original group of men convinced Bundy that a formal organization was needed to include all types of racing enthusiasts. The Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club, or DARF as we are known today was born. Today, DARF is one of the largest fan clubs in the country.
The club has many special events and projects during the year.
Wally Scherer Injured Drivers Benevolent Fund (Auction in October).
"Toys for Kids" Race Car Show (Benefits needy children in our community).
Banquet of Champions (honors all the champions from our supporting tracks).
Promoter's Night in March (Track promoters come to share up-coming race season)
Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies (Honoring New Inductees-November)
During the racing season, members are treated as special guests on DARF race dates at many tracks throughout Ohio, Indiana and Michigan at a reduced or free admission. Club members also get 10 issues of the Club's newsletter.
Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of the month, January thru April then from September through November with the Banquet of Champions in December. The summer months are spent racing.
